Quite a few people on this list will have known my late colleague Ross Roy as editor of Studies in Scottish Literature, and others will have used his still-standard The Letters of Robert Burns (2 vols, Clarendon, 1985). Partly because he was so identified with the journal and the Burns letters, the range of his more discursive writing on Burns is not always recognized.

Below are publication details of a new book, collecting thirteen of his essays or lectures on Burns. long with introductions to such well-known Burns poems as "Tam o' Shanter" and "Auld Lang Syne," it includes essays discussing Burns's attitudes to the French Revolution, politics, and religion, his love-letters to Clarinda, The Merry Muses of Caledonia, poems written about Burns, and the editing of Burns's works. The volume opens with an autobiographical preface about his life and experience with Burns scholarship and Burns scholars, recorded shortly before his death in 2013, and an interview with him about his great Burns collection, recorded in 2008.  We hope this volume will keep his scholarly contribution and his characteristic voice in circulation both for those who knew him and those who did not.
