Abstract With increasing focus on ‘impact’ as a part of REF, there has been an ongoing debate around how best to achieve, enhance and measure this more practical side of research. Within this talk I explore two distinct ways in which impact can be understood. This foundation will then be used to consider how academics might want to develop their own impact agenda. The Love Fighting Hate Violence campaign will be used as a case study to offer some context. Dr. Christopher R. Matthews, is a senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University. He has published widely on various topics including the sociology of violence, men’s power, workplace inequality, critical health studies, social theory, gender studies, combat sport and teaching in HE. He is currently conducting research on topics including concussion, medical provision in boxing, drug use and physical activity. He is also a recently retired amateur boxer who has spent eight years researching the sport using ethnographic methods.
