Theacclaimed ‘imaginative and inspiring’ Trench Brothers project starts this week to commemorate thecontributions and personal stories of ethnic minority soldiers in the FirstWorld War will culminate in Brighton and the South East this year.

Awardwinning charity HMDT Music is working with greatly respected Community InterestCompany Strike a Light – Arts and Heritage, to explore the stories of theimpact the Indian Army Military Hospitals in Brighton and the British WestIndies Regiment training camp in Seaford had on local communities at the time.

We areseeking volunteers to help embark on a voyage of discovery exploring localnewspapers, archives and anecdotal reminiscences. Between February and July2018, we will offer training and support to research members of the Labour Corpwho found their way to Sussex and their stories when they arrived. We willundertake visits to The Keep archives, The Chattri, Seaford Museum and NewhavenFort as well as interview Sussex residents who may have links with this theme

These findingswill be captured and showcased as part of the interactive Trench BrothersExhibition being shown at Newhaven Fort from August 2018, which features acreative response to the research as part of a bigger event.

Thefinal strand is an education project involving eight local schools usingpuppetry, composition, artefacts, costumed interpreters and cross-curricularlearning, leading to them performing a newly commissioned music theatre work bycomposers Julian Joseph and Richard Taylor and librettist Tertia Sefton-Greenalongside jazz and opera singers, musicians and puppeteers at Brighton Dome inOctober 2018.
