Purpose: Studies in Ableism (SiA) has intensified in the past decade and SiA is now becoming a popular conceptual approach for research about abledment and/or disability. This 3.5 hours intensive workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to make a spotlight presentation (15 mins) about the utility of SiA in an area of their research. As the workshop will be restricted to those presenting their work, there will be rich opportunities for engagement, clarifications and discussion. The aim is to share new knowledge about theorising ableism and its translation in research outputs. We will use our collective insights to promote SiA as beneficial for the study of difference and inequalities.

The workshop will be recorded and made publicly available for other researchers unable to attend. It is proposed, subject to the agreement of participants, to hold a follow up workshop at an agreed date to review subsequent draft papers with a view to publication in a Special Issue of a journal (yet to be negotiated). We expect there to be greater demand than available participant places. There will be a waiting list. There is no fee for this intensive. All participants are expected to commit to virtual participation for the TOTAL duration of the workshop. If you are unable to commit to the whole session, please do not apply. There will be a short 10-minute break after presentations before moving into discussion. The medium of presentations will be English.

The intensive will be facilitated and is being organised by Dr Fiona Kumari CAMPBELL, as an independent non-funded initiative, part of a voluntary project “Introducing Studies in Ableism” ( which runs free and open access courses in a virtual environment. Unfortunately, due to this being an entirely unfunded initiative live captioning will not be available in this instance. The program will factor in time differences to best meet the needs of presenters.

Application process
• Send details of your name, university affiliation, research discipline, employment status (e.g. ECR, tenured, Post doc, PhD student etc), email address, and abstract. 
• Abstracts should include 3-5 keywords, a title and a maximum 300-word description.

• Successful participants will be notified shortly after the closing date for abstracts and then will be sent details of the program including the Zoom link (URL) for video conferencing.
• Successful applicants will be asked to sign an agreement accepting the terms and conditions of workshop participation.
• Due to limited places (10), unsuccessful applicants should not assume any inference is being made about the quality of their submission.
• All applications will be held in the strictest confidence.
