While disability hate crimes have received significant attention in recent years, hate speech directed at disabled people is an area that is still largely neglected.

Research has revealed that disabled people are more likely than their non-disabled peers to be the victims of hate speech and hate crime (Sherry, 2013; Emerson & Roulstone, 2015). Only the most severe forms of hate speech may be forbidden by law and recognized as crimes. Very few cases of hate speech are reported to the police and even less are eventually brought to trial.

Unfortunately, whereas research has addressed the consequences of hate speech for ethnic minorities (e.g. Gelber & McNamara, 2015) and religious groups (e.g. Perry, 2014), there is less knowledge about the hate speech and disabled people.

This is a call for chapters in an edited volume which fills this gap in the literature by specifically focusing on disability hate speech. Hate speech includes the use of ‘degrading, threatening, harassing or stigmatizing speech which affects an individual’s or a group’s dignity, reputation and status in society (Parekh, 2012). We are interested in submissions from a variety of perspectives and countries addressing the harms and variety of consequences of hate speech.

The book is edited by Mark Sherry (University of Toledo, USA) [[log in to unmask]], Terje Olsen [[log in to unmask]], John JE. Eriksen [[log in to unmask]]; and Janikke S. Vedeler [[log in to unmask]].

The draft timeline for the book is:

May 1, 2018: Deadline for 250 word abstracts.

June 1, 2018: Editors submit proposal of the complete volume with chapter titles/content and contributors to the publisher, an international academic press.

December 1, 2018. Deadline for first draft of chapters.

May 2018, editors complete editing the volume, editors submit complete manuscript to publishers.
