Dear all:

We (= some of Alan's colleagues at York and his wife Liz) thought it might be a nice idea to collect together some of the wonderful tributes to Alan in one place.  So if you feel moved to make a public tribute can we suggest you post it on this "Maynard Matters" blog page (https://maynardmatters.com/).

We originally set up this blog in 2016 alongside a book of Alan's selected works (https://www.york.ac.uk/che/publications/books/maynard-matters/), but will now re-frame it to include posthumous tributes as well.  (My apologies the blog header text is not updated yet with the sad news of Alan's passing but will be soon; I hope later today).

The idea is, as Jennie suggests, to encourage more people to stand on the shoulders of giants and engage in a bit of critical thinking on health policy.

PS May I take this opportunity to say how much I value this email list community as well, and how much I appreciate Adam's work in setting it up and keeping it going.  I'm afraid I'm a passive observer, as unlike the rest of you I know even less about US health policy than those in charge of it, but the discussions are always informative, fascinating and fun.

Alan will be missed by so many people for so many reasons. He was remarkable - in my experience economist are one of the easiest disciples to ‘spot’ before they opened their mouth - but not Alan.  Magnanimous with his intellect, used humour like a precision instrument, great social skills, politically literate and engaged. The impact of an increasing frequency of deaths of significant people in ones life is an aspect of ageing I wasn’t prepared for. The breadth and quality of Alan’s work is remarkable. I am grateful that I had a chance to meet him and I shall certainly miss his insightful commentary. This is another reminder of how much I value my connection with this groups of scholars. Thank you Alan — and thank you Adam for pulling us all together.
