medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Professor Chandler,

Thank you very much for your answer and advice. I am a fan of Professor Bynum’s work. My article intends to further develop some of her intuitions regarding blood devotion in Italian lands. That said, however, her research usually focuses on northern European forms of devotion, thus most of her primary sources cannot help me on this particular subject.

All the best,

Marco

Marco, I guess you've checked Caroline Walker Bynum's work, always extravagantly documented. E.g.,
    “The Blood of Christ in the Later Middle Ages.” Church History 71 (2002): 685–714;

and her book Wonderful Blood with its huge bibliography:

Bathing in the blood of Christ was a current metaphor in Italy. I would
point you especially to the writings of the 14th-century Catherine of
Siena. Suzanne Noffke's 4-vol. translation of Catherine's letters have
excellent critical apparatus - check the backs of the volumes, and the
indices. They allow you to track an array of metaphors related to bathing,
drinking, swimming, etc in blood. The same can be found in her treatise Il Dialogo.

Dear all,

My name is Marco Piana, and I am a Ph.D. student at McGill University, Montreal. During the last months, I have been working on an article on blood devotion in early modern Italy. One of my case studies involves a vision/prophecy where people convert to Christianity by bathing into the blood of Christ. I was wondering if it is a consistent topos in medieval Christianity, and if so, if you ever encountered a similar case.

Thank you very much in advance!

All the best,

Marco
