Hi Sam,

I took my first EE role 4 years ago when I was in a senior lecturer position. To secure the role I agreed to be mentored by my colleague who was the course leader and experienced EE. The course in question was an FDa course so that helped. This year I managed to secure my first degree course and top course, both of which are on teach out, so only 2 year contracts remaining. I am hoping that once all three have finished and I should find it easier to secure my first full undergraduate EE position, un-mentored. Agreeing to have a mentor could be a way for others to break into the EE circuit? The pay is an issue and claiming back expenses can be a headache. I am sure if you calculate the hours involved in travel, conversations and report writing, overall it would be under minimum wage. Not to mention that some exam boards can be at rather inconvenient times i.e. when you want to book a holiday or school half terms. Looks great on a CV though!

Hope this helps.

David

Hello Sam
I think it is also important to consider those who want to be an external but not able to get the offers. I have tried a few times but there is a trend for the request for ‘external examiners’ with experience. I have 20 years’ experience in the hospitality industry including further education, and now completing my 14th year teaching in higher education at undergraduate and post graduate levels as a senior lecturer with responsibilities. I am also completing my PhD. Some transparency and feedback would be helpful for those who want to be an external. I would like to hear of others who maybe in the same predicament.
Kindest regards
Patsy

Hi Sam
I do agree with lea. The fees just have not kept up with inflation and with the burgeoning pressures on academics to deliver in other areas coupled with the fact that fewer institutions are now recognising external examinerships as important for career progression The number of people prepared to take on the role is diminishing
Best wishes

Good afternoon,

I am hoping to draw on some collective experience.

Is anyone able to share with me any published guidance/best practice at your relevant institutions in the way that you recruit and manage external examiners?

My particular focus is on improving the quality of external examiners which are recruited and also the encouragement of more staff to become external examiners.

Please do email me directly [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
