Militarch list members may be interested in this new report from Historic England on the former RAF Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire. http://research.historicengland.org.uk/Report.aspx?i=15868<http://research.historicengland.org.uk/Report.aspx?i=15868&ru=%2fResults.aspx%3fp%3d1%26n%3d10%26rn%3d74%26ry%3d2017%26ns%3d1>. It presents a reassessment of the flying field Conservation Area- including a revised account of the 1970s Cold War ‘hardened’ structures, based on recently released files.

For those not familiar with this former airfield, it was founded during the First World War and re-established under Trenchard’s scheme to provide permanent bases for the RAF, when it became an exemplary airfield for the design standards of the scheme. It was further developed in the Second World War and in the Cold War, including the addition of hardened structures during the 1970s. Today its flying field is an increasingly rare example of an unaltered Cold War fast jet airbase.

Robin
