I am proud to announce the latest book in the Routledge Interdisciplinary D=
isability Studies Series, A Feminist Ethnography of Secure Wards for Women =
with Learning Disabilities: Locked Away By Rebecca Fish.

What is life like for women with learning disabilities detained in a secure=
unit? This book presents a unique ethnographic study conducted in a contem=
porary institution in England.

Rebecca Fish takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on both the socia=
l model of disability and intersectional feminist methodology, to explore t=
he reasons why the women were placed in the unit, as well their experiences=
of day-to-day life as played out through relationships with staff and othe=
r residents. She raises important questions about the purpose of such units=
 and the services they offer.

Through making the women=E2=80=99s voices heard, this book presents their e=
xperiences and unique perspectives on topics such as seclusion, restraint, =
and resistance. Exploring how the ever present power disparity works to reg=
ulate women=E2=80=99s behaviour, the book shows how institutional responses=
 replicate=E3=80=80women=E2=80=99s=E3=80=80bad experiences from=E3=80=80the=
past, and how women=E2=80=99s responses are seen=E3=80=80as pathological.=
=E3=80=80It demonstrates that women are not passive recipients of care,=E3=
=80=80but=E3=80=80shape=E3=80=80their own identity and futures, sometimes b=
y resisting the norms expected of them (within allowed limits) and sometime=
s by transgressing the rules.=E3=80=80=C2=A0These insights thus challenge t=
raditional institutional accounts of gender, learning disability and devian=
ce and highlight areas for reform in policy, practice, methodology, and soc=
ial theory.

Please consider buying this book, or at least ordering it for your library.=
I think it is a really important contribution to Disability Studies - equi=
valent of Goffman's Asylum, but informed by feminist theory and principles,=
and applied to the experiences of people with learning disabilities in loc=
ked wards.=C2=A0 I hope it is widely read and included in many disability s=
tudies courses, as well as feminist courses, ethnography, sociology, and ot=
her fields.

This book is the latest in the Series, which can be found at:

ERIES INCLUDE:

1.=C2=A0A Sociological Approach to Acquired Brain Injury and Identity By Jo=
nathan Harvey

Inspired by the author=E2=80=99s personal experience of sustaining acquired=
brain injury (ABI), this path-breaking book explores the (re)construction =
of identity after ABI. It offers a way of understanding ABI through a socia=
l scientific lens, promoting an understanding that is generated through clo=
se engagement with the lives and experiences of ABI survivors. The author f=
ollows the everyday experiences of six male survivors and critically invest=
igates their identity (re)construction after their ABI. As well as demonstr=
ating identity (re)construction after ABI, the experiences of the participa=
nts allow the reader to investigate neurological rehabilitation from their =
perspective. This book suggests that rehabilitation after ABI is often a co=
ntinual process that extends beyond the formal, medically prescribed period=
. It also shows that identity after ABI is often (re)constructed in an unpr=
edictable way; a way that emphasises the importance of reciprocal support a=
nd the uncertainty of future life.

2 .DISABILITY AND POSTSOCIALISM BY TEODOR MLADENOV
In the decades following the collapse of state socialism at the end of 1980=
s, disabled people in Central and Eastern Europe endured economic marginali=
sation, cultural devaluation and political disempowerment. Some of the mech=
anisms producing these injustices were inherited from state socialism, whil=
e others emerged with postsocialist neoliberalisation. State socialism prom=
ised social security guaranteed by the public, and postsocialist neoliberal=
isation promised independent living underpinned by the market. This book ar=
gues that both promises failed as far as disabled people were concerned, dr=
awing on a wide range of scholarly reports and analyses, policy documents, =
legislation, and historical accounts, as well as on disability studies and =
social justice theory. Besides differences, the book also illuminates conti=
nuities between state socialism and postsocialist capitalism, providing on =
this basis a more general and historically grounded critique of contemporar=
y neoliberalisation and its impact on individual and collective life.

3.=C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0PEDAGOGY, DISABILITY AND COMMUNICATION: APPLYING DISA=
BILITY STUDIES IN THE CLASSROOM, EDITED BY MICHAEL S. JEFFRESS

Research has long substantiated the fact that living with a disability crea=
tes significant and complex challenges to identity negotiation, the practic=
e of communication, and the development of interpersonal relationships. Fur=
thermore, individuals without disabilities often lack the knowledge and too=
ls to experience self-efficacy in communicating with their differently-able=
d peers. So how do these challenges translate to the incorporation of disab=
ility studies in a classroom context and the need to foster an inclusive en=
vironment for differently-abled students? Bringing together a range of pers=
pectives from communication and disability studies scholars, this collectio=
n provides a theoretical foundation along with practical solutions for the =
inclusion of disability studies within the everyday curriculum. It examines=
a variety of aspects of communication studies including interpersonal, int=
ercultural, health, political and business communication as well as ethics,=
gender and public speaking, offering case study examples and pedagogical s=
trategies as to the best way to approach the subject of disability in educa=
tion.

4.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0DISABILITY AND RURALITY: IDENTITY, GENDER A=
ND BELONGING EDITED BY KAREN SOLDATIC, KELLEY JOHNSON

This is the first book to explore how far disability challenges dominant un=
derstandings of rurality, identity, gender and belonging within the rural l=
iterature. The book focuses particularly on the ways disabled people give, =
and are given, meaning and value in relation to ethical rural consideration=
s of place, physical strength, productivity and social reciprocity. A range=
of different perspectives to the issues of living rurally with a disabilit=
y inform this work. It includes the lived experience of people with disabil=
ities through the use of life history methodologies, rich qualitative accou=
nts and theoretical perspectives. It goes beyond conventional notions of ru=
rality, grounding its analysis in a range of disability spaces and places a=
nd including the work of disability sociologists, geographers, cultural the=
orists and policy analysts. This interdisciplinary focus reveals the contra=
dictory and competing relations of rurality for disabled people and the res=
ultant impacts and effects upon disabled people and their communities mater=
ially, discursively and symbolically.

a continual process that extends beyond the formal, medically prescribed pe=

1980s, disabled people in Central and Eastern Europe endured economic margi=

mechanisms producing these injustices were inherited from state socialism, =
while others emerged with postsocialist neoliberalisation. State socialism =
promised social security guaranteed by the public, and postsocialist neolib=

and social justice theory. Besides differences, the book also illuminates c=

on this basis a more general and historically grounded critique of contemp=

Hi Everyone:

I've created an online course that is self paced and is based on the book I
published this year: "Styles in Word: A Primer for Accessible Document
Design." Participants get a copy of the book when they take the online
course. The online course supports the book with videos demonstrating the
techniques. I tried to provide the same information you'd get in a one day
workshop, but because it is an online course, I've been able to add more
content.

If you need to or want to create more accessible Word documents, this course
will be of interest to you.

For more information or to register, visit
http://www.karlencommunications.com/StylesInWordCourse.html

Please share this information.

Cheers, Karen
