The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome the University of East Anglia (UEA) as its newest Associate Member today.
Through its teaching and research activities, the University of East Anglia (UEA) creates and collects a wide range of digital content, much of which needs to remain accessible and usable over time. The driver for the University of
East Anglia joining as a Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) Associate at this time is for its Archives to develop better workflows and infrastructure to ingest ‘born digital’ material within its literary archive collections.
The University has a number of archives, such as the University Archives, the British Archive for Contemporary Writing (BACW) and the East Anglian Film Archive (EAFA), which are each engaged in digitisation and are beginning to collect
born digital content. Steps are already in place to transfer and secure the files, but we wish to develop a more robust strategy for dealing with this content.
Professor Sarah Barrow, Pro Vice Chancellor of Arts and Humanities at UEA said: “As well as the British Archive for Contemporary Writing, UEA has significant other cultural heritage collections, in the form of the East Anglian Film
Archive and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art. It is vital that UEA safeguards the future of these highly prized collections. Rapid technological change presents challenges in terms of curation but it also suggests exciting new possibilities for discovery
and access. We look forward to progressing initiatives that tackle these challenges in partnership with our peers, facilitated, in part, through the excellent work of the coalition.”
“UEA is well known for its work in digital humanities and the important collections housed within its archives,” notes William Kilbride, Executive Director of the DPC. “We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with such a
dynamic team of people, exploring potential solutions to the specific digital preservation challenges presented by their work as part of a wider community.”
Helen Lewis, Director of Research and Innovation said: “We look forward to the many benefits of DPC Membership for UEA, including opportunities to build expertise and forge ahead with wider institutional initiatives that safeguard
access to digital content.”
The DPC helps members to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services, helping them to derive enduring value from digital collections. The coalition also raises awareness of the attendant strategic, cultural and
technological challenges and supports members through advocacy, workforce development, capacity-building and partnership.
