Large longitudinal studies: design and methodology

Thursday 26 October 2017, 2pm-7pm

Royal Statistical Society, London

The UK has led the world with its investment in population cohorts following children from birth into old age. Study design has proliferated from repeatedly following up all those born in one week and many studies now exist in the UK and across the world. Optimal approaches to design and analysis for social science and policy evaluation need to take account of this potential. This meeting will articulate methodological priorities.

Speakers:

• Lorraine Dearden (UCL)

• Piero Falorsi (Istat)

• Ruth Gilbert (UCL)

• Peter Lynn (Essex)

• George Ploubidis (UCL)

Speakers will address the potential and challenges of design and analysis to answer substantive questions making use of multiple and focused studies across the world. This includes integrating administrative data with surveys as part of the design; harmonisation and comparability; inference with missing data; and indirect model-based estimation of change.

The event will conclude with a panel discussion to establish an RSS vision about the future of investments in design and methodology for these studies. Panellists will include speakers as well as

• Harvey Goldstein (Bristol)

• Erica Prufall (Wellcome)

• Ray Chambers (Wollongong)
