Dear colleagues

If you are in Bristol next week you may be interested in these African film events on Thursday 26th and Sunday 29th October, part of the Africa's Lost Classics project.

Other events follow during the weekend of the Afrika Eye Film Festival in Bristol, 10-12 November.

Africa's Lost Classics is a 1-year AHRC-funded project run by Dr. Lizelle Bisschoff (University of Glasgow) and Professor David Murphy (University of Stirling), and coordinated by Dr. Stefanie Van de Peer (University of Glasgow). The programme includes films and events that take place during Africa in Motion in Scotland and around the UK at the other African film festivals, during Oct and Nov 2017.

Best wishes,

Jacqueline

Africa's Lost Classics

Curated by Dr Jacqueline Maingard, Reader in Film, University of Bristol

Banned, censored, forgotten and lost, this part of the Afrika Eye pre-festival film programme brings some of Africa's most rare cinematic gems to Bristol.

This rich range of African films drawn from across the continent and from different periods offers new insights into, and understanding of, African cultures and histories. Often produced within tumultuous times, they pose questions about Africa, its past and its future. Set within powerful storylines, themes such as post-colonialism, 'blaxploitation', migration and more bring context to the Africa of then and now.

This may be your only chance to see these fascinating films on the big screen and, often accompanied by a Q&A panel and expert commentaries, you can really delve into the film's background with Afrika Eye Film Festival.

Afrika Eye Film Festival, held annually in Bristol, is the South West’s biggest celebration of African cinema and culture. Our Festival brings films and diverse perspectives on Africa and the African diaspora to growing audiences in Bristol and the South West. We combine the medium of film with related arts to challenge the stereotypes, dispel the myths and explore the traditions and transformations in the ever-changing social and political landscape across this vast continent.
