Folk music composer by computer!?

Sat 25/3, 12noon - 2pm workshop <http://www.insideoutfestival.org.uk/2017/events/folk-music-composed-by-a-computer/> as part of the InsideOut festival

The workshop is free but please register through the link.

The workshop is the result of an ongoing research collaboration applying “machine learning” to modeling folk music – specifically, tens of thousands of “Celtic” tunes typically played in pubs and festivals around Ireland, France and the UK. The result is a computer program that can generate an endless number of tunes. With human interpretation, these tunes can become music sharing a surprising number of qualities with “genuine” folk music.

The workshop will include a short presentation followed by a performance of original and computer generated tunes. Participants will then have the opportunity to learn to play one of these tunes (bring your instruments) and we will end with a Q&A session.
