And of course, from Du Cange (online from the Sorbonne: :

Cornu Epistolæ, Cornu Evangelii, Latus altaris, ubi Epistola vel Evangelium legitur. Occurrit in Syn. Valentina an. 1590. et apud Script. Eccles. recentiores passim.

That's great.  In another related document it does indeed look like cornu but I didn't think it could be!

Many thanks

Hi Laura,

“cornu epistolae”, the right side of the alter, from the point of view of the congregation. Cornu, -us can made “side”. The other side would be the “cornu euangeliae”.

I'm struggling to transcribe a document which refers to the epistle side of a church screen (at least I think that's what it's talking about) but I can't read the term for side.  It looks like 'cirnu/cornu epistole'.  A dictionary search leads to 'citra' as a possibility, but it really doesn't look like that.  What would be the usual term for 'epistle side'?

Many thanks,

Laura
