I took part in a session for autistic children and though I hadn't been involved in the preparation work, the person who did used materials which were the same or represented the texture of items on display. Also, any noises were switched off in confined areas and the only low point was criticism of mannequins, that they were rather scary but that could be a comment made by any young person!

I think I would also ask for advice from the schools about anything the museum can build upon so as not to repeat the same what would be provided in their classroom. Such children may have experienced lots of sensory activities prior to coming to your museum. However, they may not - just as with all children, it's all about offering something which they wouldn't be able to do at school.

Good luck! They can be a brilliant group of people to work with if you manage how you communicate and behave with them.

Hi everyone

We are hoping to put together some resources for children with Additional Support Needs, particularly those on the Autism Spectrum, probably in the form of backpacks with sensory toys and information about the museum.

It would be really useful to hear about other places that have similar kinds of resources in place – where you sourced items and what worked/didn’t work? Also any other advice on this area would be much appreciated as we are really keen to improve our provision.

Thank you very much,

Lynsey
