medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thank you for this idea, Sherry.  This is my suspicion, as well, but it would certainly clarify the issue if I could be more specific about the unusual garments of the Apostles.  Unfortunately, the central part of the composition was destroyed in the 17th century, when a large archway was excavated through the wall, so the figure of Christ no longer survives, but if these garments are albs, I'm wondering if the Apostles are represented, for example, as deacons, matching some kind of priestly figure of Christ, or even if they are represented as canons in relation to an episcopal image of Christ.  Any other suggestions gratefully accepted.
Cheers,
Jim

Is this perhaps part of a decorative program celebrating the orthodox clergy's expression of triumph over the medieval heretics in that region? I recall having suspected something of the kind when I visited that cathedral years ago.

Here is a link to the image, the Last Judgement on the west wall of Albi Cathedral.  The Apostles are at upper left, and if you click a couple of times on the image, it zooms in quite close.

Do you have an image that you can send us? I'm trying to think if I've ever seen the apostles in anything aside from tunics and togas in Byzantine art, but your description sounds vaguely like an exorasson (which Orthodox clergy adopted in the Ottoman era to designate their judicial role).

Dear List Members,
I am trying to figure out a detail in an image of the Last Judgement which has me puzzled.  All of the Apostles are dressed alike, not in the standard "biblical" robes but in long-sleeved tunics (or albs?) which appear to reach to their feet.  They are mauve in colour, with gold at the collar and sleeves, which flare out a bit at the extremities, partly covering their hands.  Would these be liturgical vestments of some sort?  And if so, why would Apostles be so dressed?  I believe this image dates from the mid-16th century, which may be a bit post-medieval, but certainly not beyond the expertise of this splendid list.  Any suggestions about this would be most welcome.
Cheers,
Jim
