University of Warwick BSA regional event
Educational (in)equalities: towards an elite but not elitist society.
Keynote speakers:
Professor Fiona Devine (University of Manchester)
Dr Claire Maxwell (Institute of Education, University of London)
In an increasingly unequal society, it is possibly a truism that inequalities are pervasive in the education sector. Whether the discussion involves compulsory or higher education, recent studies suggest that children from wealthier families have better opportunities to succeed academically (Press Association, 2015). This usually translates into private education or securing places in schools which have a reputation for high exam results. Almost by default, exam results translate into life success, reinforcing structural social and economic inequalities. The aim of this event is to foster discussion and debate on how this discourse can be understood in order to ensure equal opportunities across societies.
Some of the key areas that will be discussed on the day cover (but are not limited to):
• Class and social divisions
• Structural social inequalities
• Ideas of privilege and social stratification
• Social class in contemporary urban contexts
