Dear sigma Colleagues
The three week course is particularly suited to students about to start university level foundation science and engineering courses. It introduces students to the way mathematical symbols
are used by scientists and engineers to represent physical quantities and how mathematics is used to show how one quantity is related to another leading to both algebraic and graphical representations of linear relationships and the applications of linearity
in science and engineering.
The course runs on the FutureLearn platform and students may work through the onscreen articles and videos at their own pace testing their understanding through quizzes. Course materials
remain online indefinitely after the end of the three week period.
"The great thing about this course was that it took us step by step explaining the principles
and techniques and along with the maths it showed us real world applications. The knowledge was reinforced by giving us examples to work out and then testing our new found knowledge quite rigorously to ensure we could see our individual weaknesses in understanding
of the material covered. “ [Jimmy Wilson, 27 March 2015]
Please circulate this opportunity to science and engineering colleagues in your organisation.
Best wishes
Janette
