To my mum: “free learning” (I might throw in ‘philanthropic’ or ‘social good’ to help further)

To colleagues/professionals: “free educational resources”

‘open’ doesn’t always make sense to everyone (she says, working in the Open Media Unit…)

I think you cant beat OER – Open Educational Resources – describe what they are.  Creative Commons describes what you can do with them – (the licence)

I come across many who don’t know what an OER is – but as previously said – Open Educational Resources – starts to make sense.  It also makes sense to those who are new to the use of OERs and can be explained in context of the types of licences  available.  OERs can be explained in isolation from CC but  CC cannot standalone as an explanation of an OER.

Thanks - & yes, I think people (in the UK at least) do get the idea of “the Commons” as a concept. (mind you, there’s always one medieval historian that takes umbrage…)

David,

I like to use the term ‘Creative Commons’, it links to the idea that teaching is a creative act.

‘Share your teaching materials as creative commons’ is much nicer to say than ‘publish your materials as OER’.

Saw an interesting question from Sarah Bridgeman (https://twitter.com/SarahMay81 on twitter) :

What’s a better term for “OER”, to use with non-specialists?

I know there has been plenty of discussion here on this over the years, but do we have any alternate terms that people are actively and successfully using?
