Peter I would also say as a former VI teacher myself that if the student has requested this type of placement they must feel themselves that they are able to cope and employ strategies in regards to their own and others health and safety. There is no reason to assume this student with their sighted helper is at any greater risk than any other student in the same setting, and indeed may be safer as there is a second person the sighted helper present. A male student who is totally blind is due to begin a teacher training course in the upcoming academic year. He has asked to be considered for a placement working in an offender learning setting. This will probably be in a prison. Although the student will be supported by a sighted helper, the course manager is concerned about potential health and safety (i.e.security) issues. Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Any thoughts/advice would be gratefully received.
