Following the award of a Collaborative Doctoral Partnership to University College London’s Department of Science and Technology Studies and the Royal Society, funding is available for a PhD degree at UCL on the topic of “Charles Blagden and Banksian Science, 1770-1820.” 

Blagden was secretary to the Royal Society during the presidency of Sir Joseph Banks, with whom he maintained a close relationship. Blagden also kept a diary for many years which is now located in the archives of the Royal Society. The diary has scarcely been used by historians of science yet it provides a remarkably detailed account of scientific life in London and Paris in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth century. 

The PhD will involve transcribing part of the diary and interpeting it in the historical context of science and society c. 1770-1820. For full details of the project and how to apply, please go to the UCL website:
