medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thank you very much Katrina, Meg and Jane

I'm afraid my husband says we cannot go as far as Trondheim, so we thought we'd try and do a circle to Bergen and back by a different route - probably hiring a car, although we've also been told that the train journey is spectacular, so we may do that one way, if we don't have a good route back.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Rosemary,

My list would include:

Viking ships, Oslo
Historical Museum, Oslo - there is a good selection of religious material there.
Gol stave church in the Norwegian folk museum (it is not one of the most interesting stave churches, but is easy to get to and fairly typical)

The best stave churches are Urnes and Borgund which are both up in Sogn and Fjordane. You'd need to hire a car - but the scenery is breathtaking, and the churches unique.

In Bergen, the Bryggen area has a wonderful museum relating to the Hanseatic traders. Very close to Bergen there is also the Fantoft stave church, which has recently been reconstructed, having been destroyed in an arson attack about 20 years ago.

If you have time, Trondheim Cathedral is really a must see (but not at the expense of the stave churches!).

Have a wonderful time!

All best wishes,
Katrina Attwood

May I crave the indulgence of any experts on Scandinavia (Meg)?

We are planning a holiday in Norway and have got as far as thinking that we will fly in and out of Oslo, doing a round trip to Bergen (perhaps coming back by train).  I know that there are medieval wooden (?stave) churches that one should see, to say nothing of the Oslo Viking museum but really have little idea of where else one should go.  Are there any must sees for medievalists?

Many thanks indeed,
Rosemary
