# Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Open Access Issues on Landmark Papers

The world's oldest scientific journal, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, celebrates its 350th anniversary this month.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Royal Society has published two special journal issues in which modern experts revisit landmark papers published in Philosophical Transactions to explore how they have impacted science across the globe.

* Highlights in the two celebratory issues include: science writer Philip Ball, writing on Alan Turing's paper 'Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis' on the spontaneous formation of patterns in the natural world; Dr Nick Lane reflects on Leeuwenhoek's first glance into the microscopic world of bacteria; Patricia Fara explores Newton's 1672 paper which presented his new theory about light and colour; Jim Al-Khalili takes a look at Faraday's 'Experimental researches in electricity' and John McEvoy on 'Gases, God and the balance of nature: a commentary on Priestley (1772) 'Observations on different kinds of air' . All of these papers can be downloaded gratis from the Royal Society sites below.<http://rsta.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/373/2039/20140229>

Philosophical Transactions pioneered the concepts of scientific priority and peer review which, together with archiving and dissemination, provide the model for almost 30,000 scientific journals today.

To celebrate the anniversary the Royal Society is holding a series of events looking back at the history of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and forwards to the future of scientific publication. # Anthology: Contemporary Studies in HPS & Science Teaching

The 76 chapters in the HPS&ST handbook cover a good deal of the HPS&ST field, but they do not exhaust it. Topics that were planned for the handbook, but that for different reasons did not make the published version include:

'Feminism and Sc. Educ. Debates'

'HPS & Sc. Teacher Preparation'

'The Enlightenment Tradition in Science Education'

'Lessons from the History of Constructivism in Science Education Research'
'Indoctrination: Can and should it be avoided in science education?'
'Science and the Liberal Education Tradition'

There are other lacunae in the handbook that might be identified, including other biographies (just five are in the handbook) and other national studies (just eleven in the handbook).

Springer have agreed, in principle, to publish an anthology provisionally titled Contemporary Studies in HPS & Science Teaching in their Science: Philosophy, History and Education book series (www.springer.com/series/13387<http://www.springer.com/series/13387> ).

The anthology is intended to complement, not repeat, topics covered in the handbook. Of particular concern is locating and publishing research on The Enlightenment Tradition in Science Education - studies on historical, philosophical, cultural, national and educational dimensions of the topic.

The initial maximum length for anthology chapters will be 12,000 words. A 1,500 word abstract (with references) to be submitted to the editor by March 17 The final manuscript submission date will be September 1st 2015. All submissions will undergo multiple review.

Researchers working on any of the above topics (or other relevant HPS&ST topics), or who know researchers who are, please contact the anthology editor:
