Health Statistics User Group (HSUG) is holding two separate workshops on 24th April. The first will be about the changes the Office for National Statistics is making to the coding of the causes of death at all ages, including stillbirth and perinatal mortality, in England and Wales. The second is about maternity and child health information in all four countries of the UK.

These workshops are free but numbers are limited so you need to register if you wish to attend. If you wish to register for one or both of these workshops, please email  [log in to unmask] stating whether you wish to attend the morning workshop, the afternoon workshop or both workshops.


Mortality Statistics Workshop:        10.30-12.30

10:30     Sign-in and coffee / tea
People attending both morning and afternoon sessions can sign in for both at the start of the day.

11:00     Chair's Introduction - Deana Leadbeter

11:05 to 11:25    Changes to ONS mortality statistics - Claudia Wells, ONS
This will cover changes to cause of death coding resulting from the implementation of IRIS, the new cause of death coding system and also the potential impact of changes to death certification procedures.

11:25 to 12:00    Breakout sessions in smaller groups to discuss the implications of the changes

12:00 to 12:30 Feedback from breakout sessions and discussion


Lunch break       12:30 to 14:00
Please note that lunch is not provided. You can either bring your own or buy it at the wide range of local facilities, ranging from student facilities in the University to a great choice of delicacies from cafes and takeaways in Exmouth Market.

Maternity and Child Health Information Workshop:        14.00-17.00

Because of the considerable number of data sources and volume of information available in the four countries of the UK, information about data sources will be circulated to participants in advance. There will be wi-fi access so that participants can bring laptops and access these on the day. Major data producers will give brief overviews, focussing on recent and impending developments.

14:00 to 14:10    Welcome and Introduction to purpose and structure of workshop

14:10 to 14:45    Presentations by data producers, focussing on recent and impending developments. The speakers will then participate in the group sessions, and will be available to answer any queries on data sources from their organisations.

14:45 to 15:20    Group Session 1
Activities
What are the main activities in the area of maternity and child health for which data are needed?
These will include activities that workshop participants do themselves and others that they know about.

15:20 to 15:30    Feedback from Group Session 1

15:30 to 15:45    Tea / coffee break,
This will include opportunities for workshop participants to review and prioritise material produced from group session 1

15:45 to 16:30    Group Session 2

Remote access
We plan to make facilities for phoning in available, but this may prove difficult in a room with a capacity of 50.  We are also planning to offer remote Access via Adobe Connect, but if you want to use this, please contact Alison Macfarlane, [log in to unmask]  in advance, so that we can test the arrangements.  We cannot guarantee that either of these facilities will be available on the day, but notes from the meeting will be posted on the HSUG web site www.hsug.org.uk  , and further discussion after the workshop will be possible via the web site.
