You are not alone….
We have the same old same old ELT/SLT/Managers thinking that Exam board dates are movable, exam office deadline dates don’t matter and oh best of all ‘we will get a couple of temps in to make the
entries/resits that way entries can be made up to the 20th February’…. Just a couple of phrases used by my new Manager/Registrar who unsurprisingly has no Exams knowledge/background!
Does that make you feel any better?
Small rant over now to chase up teachers who do not understand the word ‘deadline’

Actually – I’d like to train Invigilators as a job. I could always come and be ‘The Inspector’ for you
J I’m fed up of looking at exam codes and getting complained at for things that have absolutely nothing to do with me and teachers having absolutely no idea about the
codes their students are enrolled/studying on.
Its been a really bad day – is anyone else having one like it?

I am liking all these ideas, I had been trying to think of a different form of training this year. I don’t want to just stand and talk at them as I know they don’t take it in! I have used the Armstrong and
Miller clips as light relief! I think I may form some training around a quiz done under exam conditions – thanks for the ideas!

Good idea about the inspector….
We had a training session arranged by ETD last year, who through in an exam ‘setting’ where each of the invigilators who were ‘sitting’ the exam were ‘up to something’, and the rest (ratio of 20 sitting and 4
invigilating) had to spot what was going on…. They missed a number of tricks, but I think that this too gave them some idea of what goes through candidates’ minds when sitting in an exam. The training was quite informative, although some of the participants
felt it wasn’t quite so useful as our normal update session – perhaps because it went on for longer!
Has anybody come across a smart watch in an exam yet?

No – but we had some trying to look at what their neighbour had put. It was a good exercise actually because I started it the way they start exams and they all commented that they all tensed up at the start
because of the unknown and I think it made them empathise a bit more with the students. Didn’t arrange a stranger to come in and be an Inspector though

I was pleasantly surprised and it helped with prizes for those with the highest score. We even had a fire alarm in the middle (pretend of course) and they had to remain under exam conditions throughout.

Could you set them a quiz which they have to answer independently and do it in a pretend exam. They have a bit of fun, yet you get to assess how much they really know as well – just a thought

Hi all,
I was wondering if any of you had an invigilators handbook and job description I could possibly look at (and steal some of the info).
I’ve now got to officially appraise all of our invigilators (38 of them) as the yearly training course no longer satisfies our HR requirements grrr!
Many thanks in advance.
