I have read the background research to the changes in Type 1 diabetics and DVLA guidance (which incidentally came from a European Directive on and although it doesn’t specifically mention FLT drivers (although one study I read briefly mentioned it) my view is that there is enough evidence to suggest that they should monitor blood glucose when driving at work. Here is an extract from Understanding, knowledge and attitudes towards current UK driving advice in insulin treated diabetic patients. (2009) DMS Bodansky, HJ Bodansky*
Deficits in cognitive function are
common as a result of hypoglycaemic
episodes below 2–2.5mmol/L and
noticeable effects can start below
3.5mmol/L.3–5 However, drivers
may not take corrective action
until a blood glucose of 2.8mmol/L
is reached.2
Long duration diabetes6,7 and
tight glycaemic control8,9 may predispose
to a lack of the usual warning
symptoms of hypoglycaemia. This
situation is not uncommon; 25% of
type 1 diabetic patients are unable to
detect the start of hypoglycaemia.
From a risk assessment point of view I think that one could argue that FLT driving is as or even more dangerous than driving on a defined structure like a road system.

I know there is no legislative requirement for fork lift truck driving & advice is to follow the DVLA guidance, but do you think the 2 hrly testing would apply to a permanent fork lift truck driver ?

Hi Sarah
I have altered the title of your e-mail as you will get more responses.
As others have said the DVLA requires 2 hourly readings for insulin dependent drivers. For the non-insulin diabetics it will depend on how effectively their condition is controlled, individual assessment and if not considered safe a control measure such as regular blood monitoring may be necessary.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Diabetic employees
Hello All
Happy New Year to all.
My question is do any of you request that diabetic employees carry out regular blood sugar readings at work if they are driving trucks regularly. If so is this just for insulin dependent or for tablet controlled as well? I am carrying out medicals for employees who drive trucks all shift long.
I look forward to your responses.
Many Thanks for your help with this matter
