Hi all,
I was asked for all HER data in Hampshire for certain periods by a similar website back in 2009ish – the name escapes me, but I refused! Might have been the same lot in an early incarnation, but I remember raising the issues that other have already mentioned. I seem to remember that they were planning to use it as a kind of tourist archaeology website at the time, but still failing to mention any of the important things like ‘don’t go digging up SAMs’ while at the same time saying ‘why not buy a metal detector and see what YOU can find!’...
But this yet again raises the issue that there are glamorous alternatives on the web to HERs that may be being accessed by people that may have a genuine interest in the past, but don’t necessarily know where to go. Maybe because HERs need to be promoted more within the public view?
Cheers

“ARCHI has a worldwide reach. We have had subscriptions from British and American University Archaeology / History Departments, Schools, Archaeological Societies & Clubs, County Archaeology Departments, Archaeological Consultancies, Archaeology students and Hobbyists from Australia to Mexico.”
Anyone going to own up?

Wow, It's a bit of a problem if a student at Birkbeck University hadn't found out or been told about the readily accessible HERs all across the country.

Hi All
We have recently received a heritage statement which instead of including HER information, it included information from a website called: Archaeology UK http://www.digital-documents.co.uk/archi/about_us.htm.
I have never heard of this but there is a subscription to pay for access to the data and it seems to be a little more than information from personal communications and local journals. Have any of you had any experience of this website and where the information comes from?
We are obviously enforcing the consultation of the HER in line with the NPPF but it did seem a little worrying that we seem to have a type of ‘competitor’ in loose terms and obviously this website is not going to be as up to date as the HER and is not acceptable as a substitute for the HER.
Thoughts?
