HI JO (and All)

The short answer surely has to be No, the salary offered is inadequate.

This job is clearly comparable in scope and complexity, and in qualifications demanded, to being a classroom teacher.  According to  the teaching union NASUWT, who ought to know, the main teaching pay scale  runs from about £22K to £32K.

It is generally accepted that in progressive pay scales the top point of the scale represents the rate for the job, i.e. the pay that a fully experienced worker should get for their toil.

On this basis you ought to be offering 30/37.5 of £32k as a salary, i.e. about £26k.

The fact the the organisation closes for a month (in the winter?) is irrelevant: just because you aren’t offering services to the public, or even opening your building, doesn’t mean that you can’t be doing valuable work, such as developing new workshops, running CPD events at other venues, doing outreach, or whatever.

Bear in mind, too that you won’t be able to offer as valuable a pension as that available to teachers. I don’t know the exact figure but I’d expect that teachers enrolled in their pension scheme get about 10-15% of their salary paid into that scheme by their employer on top of whatever their contribution rate is.

Employing skilled, qualified and experienced people to do worthwhile work in a civilised society should be an expensive business: don’t undervalue your staff, your biggest assets, by joining the race to the bottom (unless you went to Eton) an offering poverty pay.

In solidarity

Richard.
