North Somerset adopted GIS for the HER in 2006, probably the last authority in the country. This was largely due to there being extremely substandard management for the first 10 years of our existence (since 1996). Luckily, this is no longer the case, and my current management is, on the whole, pretty good. Perhaps Paul Gilman knows when Essex first adopted GIS for their HER. I also have a hazy memory of an article by someone who had used GIS to document the archaeology of a small island off coast somewhere which seemed revolutionary to me at the time. (The Raunds Area Project had been using an MSDOS version of Mapinfo to compile its mapping for at least two years prior to this.) The SMR mapping was however only partially linked to our old Oracle database (I think we managed to get Mapinfo to link to Oracle, but not vice versa). It’s all a bit hazy now!
