Dear Seth

I have been working on case studies for HLF funded projects.  The case studies have not been published yet but one of the projects: Hackney Remembers uses drama to get primary school children to develop an exhibition using archival material.  Their website is: http://fifthword.co.uk/projects/hackney-remembers  and also http://hackney-remembers.fifthword.co.uk

Best wishes

Hello Seth

Melissa Hawker at Ancient House Museum in Thetford ran an Arts Award summer project last year where, in summary, children chose objects from the museum’s handling collection, did a bit of research about them, produced their own labels and worked together to design a display using simple things like a plinth and some stands to put the objects at different levels, etc.  I was lucky to be at the museum to watch the group of about 8 children discuss and agree on the display and it worked very well.

I’m not sure if Melissa is on the GEM list but she’s incredibly helpful and would probably expand on this if you asked!

Best wishes

Caroline

Hello Seth,

To follow on from the suggestions given by Robin, could you look at the displays from another angle, such as looking at the story behind the museum objects and how they would share that story in their display?

Examples could be provided such as cartoon story boards or interactive screens with "people from the past" talking about their experiences with the object etc.

This may work best with older KS 2 pupils.

Best

Hello Gem

I'm developing a workshop at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall that looks ‘behind the scenes of a museum’, focusing on the different ways objects are displayed and information communicated (text, images, light, sound, interactive displays, reconstructions, etc.). As the final activity, I’ll be asking the children to use what they have seen and experienced during the day to design their own displays.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in running similar workshops and can suggest fun ways of doing this? It’s being aimed at KS2 (7-11) and they’ll have about 45 minutes. I’ve considered constructing display cases/plinths using scrap material but this may be quite laborious and time consuming, also designing displays/floor plans on paper (architectural/annotated designs) but this may be asking a lot from an 8 year old…any suggestions welcome!

Many thanks

Seth
