Ph.D. scholarship (SNSF, 2.5 years)

The successful applicant will contribute to the research project “Youth@Night - A multi-disciplinary and multi method study of young people’s going out and drinking behaviours”, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and conducted by researchers from Human Geography, University of Zurich, Addiction Switzerland Lausanne, and research group social computing Idiap Martigny. The project Youth@Night focuses on young people’s experiences at nights out, particularly in relation to their drinking practices in urban nightlife. It has two broad goals: a) to develop a smartphone data collection tool, b) to study interrelations and meanings of drinking practices, environmental factors (e.g. urban structure, atmosphere and rules at drinking venues), mobility patterns of youth at nights out, and young people’s nightlife experiences (e.g. interactions with those responsible for managing nightlife areas). The successful applicant will contribute through her/his PhD thesis to goal b). She/he will carry out fieldwork in Zurich and has access to data collected in Lausanne. She/he will work with qualitative methods, whereas research partners will work with quantitative methods. Applicants should have an excellent Master’s degree in Human Geography, Urban studies, Youth studies, Sociology or any other relevant social sciences discipline and be proficient in English and German. Knowledge of French will be regarded as an asset. We expect the successful applicant to work on her/his own initiative in an already outlined project, to have ambitions to be present internationally (publications, conferences) and to be highly motivated in interdisciplinary research exchange.

The successful applicant will be part of the Human Geography Division and join a dynamic, internationally oriented research team. We offer further training trough a Graduate School, and the gaining of teaching experiences in our Bachelor and Master courses.

The appointment is by 1st of July 2014. The position (47’000-50’000 CHF p.a.) is limited to two years and six month.
