Hi we're looking at the whole area of authority control at the moment , considering outsourcing, and I must say this service seems very attractive....

We have been offered an RDA conversion service as well (by our authority control vendor).
We've not taken a long term decision on this as yet, but I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has done this, or is planning to do so.

Our LMS supplier, SirsiDynix, has devised an automated conversion to hybrid records for AACR records, including spelling out many abbreviations and adding 33X fields. Obviously it can't address the "rule of three" nor can it add relationship designators (in most cases). We are contemplating buying this service but not until we have got our heads around RDA sufficiently to assess all the options.

Hi John,

The benefit of 33X content to users will follow on from the accumulation of a significant amount of data. Our OPAC currently holds around 15 million bibliographic records from Aleph and another 40 million article records. Only around 250K of our bibliographic records on Aleph are currently RDA. Retrospective amendment of records created using other standards could upgrade them with RDA elements including the 33X. However, from a practical point of view much of this would have to rely on automated processes.

Hi Thurston,

Interesting to hear you have created 3xx specific indexes. The new fields will as you suggest help and improve faceting searching at some point in the future, but given that RDA sees the abandonment of the GMD it is odd that it's replacement is, for the moment, serving no practical purpose for many libraries.

John

Hi John,

We're made no specific provision for displaying the 33X in terms of our OPAC, although they are visible in the MARC record view. We envisage that they will be used to support facet searching at a later date. We did, however, create 3XX specific indexes on our GUI.

Hi Rosemary,

We also have encore and have suppressed the 33x fields - my understanding is that they are not meant for display. I'd be interested to hear from any libraries have actually used them to control the display of results in their catalogue.

John

Yes our load table seem to be working fine and are accepting all of the new RDA fields. The OPAC display labels are also appearing as we wish in both our classic catalogue and our discovery system (Encore). We have chosen not to display the new 3xx fields. However at the moment, for the sake of consistency, we are adding the GMD to the RDA records we accept, although both our classic catalogue and discovery systems use icons for material types. These will be removed (or suppressed) once we implement RDA fully.

Thanks Celine
We are doing the same as you, and our discovery layer is taking the format information from Leader/006/007 as well.

I'm interested in how people are managing the systems change, which has been mentioned by a few people. Rosemary, you said that your set up was done in terms of your load tables and OPAC display. Has that all been successful and are the RDA records you have from your ebooks suppliers displaying as you'd hope?

Which LMS are you using Fiona - do you have any plans to set up your LMS to accept RDA fields?

We are a Voyager library, and RDA on what we call our 'Classic catalogue' (it's Web Voyage) is working fine, but our discovery layer, VuFind, is posing a few more challenges. We've finally got the 264 working (though some copyright symbols are looking a bit peculiar!), and are still working on 1xx/7xx $e fields.

Has anyone else been having any systems challenges?

Helen

That's interesting Kate, as we are a Voyager library but have not been adding GMD to RDA records. This doesn't seem to affect our searching, frontline staff have been quite happy and there has been no impact on users as far as we can tell. We use the Voyager OPAC (which we call our Newton catalogue) but do also have a discovery layer (Aquabrowser) which many users prefer to use and which does not use GMD at all but rather takes information about format from the Leader/006/007, etc.
