***Apologies for any cross-posting*** Introduction to Statistical Methods for Geographers and Social Scientists 17th December, 2013 Organising Institution: University of Leeds (As part of TALISMAN , an ESRC funded project and NCRM node aimed at enhancing research methods across the UK) Times: 9.30 a.m.-4.30 p.m. Event Description: This one day course aims to familiarise people with different data types and how these relate to different geographical entities. For example, we can get data which may be: · About areas and/or about individuals; and · About a population or from a sample; and/or · Real numbers which measure something (e.g. % unemployed); and/or · Categorical responses to a question (e.g. Do you have good health? Yes/No) · Cross-sectional, about a point in time (e.g. year) or over time (time-series or longitudinal). This course will discuss all the above elements and give hands-on experience (using SPSS) of producing summary statistics about a dataset and carrying out and interpreting methods such as correlation and regression. We will also discuss different data sources and research questions since these influence the choice of statistical method you might use. Name of instructor: Dr Paul Norman Level: It is assumed that participants have no prior knowledge or experience of using ArcGIS but will be familiar with the Microsoft Windows environment.
