Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology

We have a vacancy for a Research Fellow/Lecturer to work in the MRC Tropical Epidemiology Group (TEG) in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. The Group was established in 1972 and comprises 34 statisticians and epidemiologists working on major health problems of developing countries. The post holder will be based in London and will work on a number of population-based studies and randomised trials in The Gambia, including studies on malaria, and will contribute to the development and application of new statistical and epidemiological methods relevant for our studies.

The successful candidate will contribute to the design of field studies, the statistical analysis of results and the preparation of research findings for publication. The studies that the post holder will be involved in are at various stages of completion, giving the successful applicant a rare opportunity to work on study design, implementation, data collection and data analysis. The person appointed will be based in London but will be expected to travel regularly to the field sites.

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the capacity development of African-based statisticians and to the School’s postgraduate teaching programme.

Applicants should have a postgraduate qualification in medical statistics and practical experience of working as an applied statistician, preferably in an epidemiological context. Experience of data analysis and familiarity with statistical packages are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary scientific team. Experience of working in developing countries would be an advantage.

This appointment will be for two years and will be made on the School’s Research Fellow or Lecturer scale (£36,018-£48,129) depending on qualifications and experience. Interested applicants are invited to contact Dr Helen Weiss ([log in to unmask]) for further information.
