Hi Ellen,
I used to run family pumpkin carving sessions at the Museum of English Rural Life. Over the years we went from  free inc a pumpkin, to charge inc pumpkin to small charge and bring your own pumpkin and we'll show you how.If you decide to offer pumpkin inc get the delivered by a supermarket - they're heavy!

You can get special pumpkin carving kits which are great as they have small saws etc which are safe for children. You could always see if supermarket might make a donation in kind. Added to this spoons for scraping flesh and a few decent kitchen knives for staff only to use cutting the lid off the pumpkin.

There are  loads of 'how tos' on the net for carving, so I won't go into that. I'd advise carving in plastic school trays/drawers to contain mess. Also have plastic bags available for anyone who wants to take seeds/flesh home and a couple of recipes for roasted pumpkin seeds and pumpkin soup. Disposing of so much flesh/seeds is a nightmare and it's nice to encourage folk to use everything.

Clean everything thoroughly after or you'll be haunted (pardon the pun) by the smell of rotting pumpkin!

Good luck! :)

Hi all

We want to offer pumpkin carving followed by a pumpkin parade on Hallowe’en for families. Has anyone ever done something like this? I would really welcome advice on logistics, what tools you allowed children to use, did you offer design ideas, where did you source the pumpkins? Or is it better to just to do crafts such as lanterns and bats on elastic and invite people to bring pre-carved pumpkins?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Eleanor
