Giving the past a future – fundraising help for Wales’ heritage

Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) has received initial support* from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to develop a project that will aim to build the fundraising capacity of heritage organisations in Wales.

The project, Giving the past a future – sustainable heritage in Wales, is being delivered by WCVA in partnership with CyMAL and the Funding Centre. CyMAL, part of Welsh Government, helps to promote and protect the culture and heritage of Wales by supporting museums, archives and libraries. The Funding Centre, a fundraising consultancy, specialises in supporting cultural and heritage organisations in Wales.

The funding is from HLF’s Catalyst heritage: building fundraising capacity umbrella grants programme. The scheme is designed to help organisations diversify their income streams, attract significantly more funding by increasing their fundraising potential and help them to develop and explore innovative approaches to securing private donations.

The three-year project will provide groups with ‘evidence-based learning’ and networking opportunities, mentoring and other support to help them grow and become financially sustainable.

‘The aim is to up-skill and increase the confidence, competency and effectiveness in fundraising of staff and volunteers, so that they can increase their organisations’ funding from private donors, corporate sources, trusts and foundations,’ said WCVA Sustainable Funding Officer Eileen Kinsman.

‘The heritage of Wales is held not just by one or two organisations,’ she added.  ‘The history of the country is told by small local groups right across the nation.  If just one of these were to be lost, there could be a profound impact on Wales’ historic record.

‘The challenge for many of these organisations is that they are reliant on dedicated volunteers for their day-to-day operations, strategic management and fundraising.  This project will help them to build their fundraising capacity and become more resilient.’

To make sure the project meets the needs of heritage organisations across Wales, WCVA needs your help. They are asking heritage organisations in Wales to complete a short survey to establish areas of need and support. It should take no more than 10 minutes to complete and respondents will be entered into a draw to win a Kindle.
