medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I knew that "10K" looked funny even as I wrote it, but was too lazy to check (which predicts, I'm afraid, the zeal I would bring to compiling my saint census).  A quick search now doesn't uncover it, but wasn't there once also a theory that the "11,000" came from misreading the meaning of a Roman mile-marker near Cologne?

It's worse than that - Ursula had *eleven* thousand virgins. Explanations range from the name Undecimillia to XI. M. V. [eleven martyred virgins] to "cum XI militibus" being read as "cum XI millibus".
