November 18-23, 2012; on-campus offering

Instructor: Tim Willis

Since exhibitions are the public face of your museum they should inspire powerful visitor experiences that convey your institution's mission and philosophy. This intensive course examines planning, designing, fabricating, and installing interpretive exhibitions that encourage museum visitors' understanding, participation, and emotional engagement. * visitor needs and characteristics
* managing the creative process: what are responsibilities of the team? What are the phases of the schedule?

* presenting objects and ideas: communicating through stories
* design tools: communicating your concepts, controlling traffic flow, the importance of sight lines, rhythm, color, texture, and lighting
* the power of graphics: wall text and design
* testing it: peer review, visitor feedback - before, during, remedial
* choosing media: current trends vs. traditional values
