This forthcoming conference will be of interest to some CHAT list members: Stylistic Dead Ends? Fresh perspectives on architecture between the world wars Thurs 20- Fri 21 June 2013 St John's College, Oxford Sponsored by the Architectural Review and Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain 'Stylistic Dead Ends?' seeks to assess the full range of architectural output during the interwar years and, where possible, its afterlife. The conference seeks to pick up on a number of 'stylistic dead-ends' of the period, e.g. the Tudoresque, neo-Georgian, gothic revival, streamline moderne, terms largely excluded by the post-war hegemony of Modernism and its master narrative, architectures that no longer held currency or bore the same meaning after the great crisis of total war. We also seek to challenge the lapse into style-discourse, and look for formal and theoretical commonalities that transcended stylistic concerns during the period. Sessions range from The Media and Institutions of Architecture in the interwar period (featuring papers on the Architectural Press, the BBC, and the architectural establishment), to The Spiritual and Monumental aspects of architecture (featuring papers on interwar crematoria, and the influence of memorials on the architecture of Holden), to Historiographical Reflections, and exciting new work on the international influence of British interwar architecture in India, the Middle East and elsewhere.
