Conduct Literature Texts for and About Women in Early Modern Italy: Between
Description and Prescription

This panel seeks to explore the rich and varied production of conduct
literature texts for and about women in Early Modern Italy. From the
sixteenth century onwards, with the diffusion of the printing press and the
establishment of the vernacular as a language of culture, Italy saw a wide
production of texts for and about women which aimed to define the nature of
women, their role in society and their conduct in everyday life.
Fluctuating between prescription and description of life and conduct, these
works embody on the one hand a feminine ideal which reflects the static and
persistent voice of tradition and on the other express specific (and
evolving) forms of social and cultural desire, that help maintain a certain
well-defined political order and power. From the long-standing figure of
the good 'Christian woman' to the courtly lady, from the daughter, wife and
widow to the nun in the cloister, these works offer an account of and
insight into the role of women according to the needs of society. We
particularly welcome contributions that explore lesser-known authors and
texts, women's conduct across social classes, social and cultural aspects
of women's conduct in daily life, translations and adaptations into the
vernacular of Latin or foreign texts, originality and plagiarism, readers'
reception, the role of texts on conduct for and about women in the history
of the book.
