Hi Emma and all,
I was just thinking the same about you doing a presentation at the next conference. I'll e-mail you about that. I went to the Horniman Museum a few months ago and had the opportunity to view some 3D copies. Impressive!
Happy New Year to all!

Subject: Re: 3D Printing

Hi Geoff
Me again! We are getting a 3D printer installed in just over a week's time. It was an offer from the printer company in conjunction with my faculty, but mainly from the product design and engineering courses, rather than architecture or construction. Our Library IT folks (who are part of the central IT function, but designated to support us) have worked with the other parties to set it up, but the library staff won't have any specialist knowledge on how it works. One of the product design students may run some surgeries on how to use it, but it is mainly a bit of a 'show piece' as well as intended for those students who have already been taught how to use it, so they have access in a location in addition to their faculty teaching spaces.

It will be centre stage (right in the entrance area) initially so we can keep an eye on it, but may get moved somewhere more practical once we see how it goes.

The printer company tell us that we are going to be the first UK University Library to have one. We'd be interested to know if this is true!
I can do a quick report back on progress at the Arclib conference, maybe?
Cheers
Emma

Subject: 3D Printing

Dear All,

A happy new year!!!

Also, just wondering if anyone has 3D printing facilities for students to use in the library. If so, could you please let me know whether it is set up by the library , the I.T. dept. or is held in house by the school/faculty.

This seems to be a useful technology for designers and I'm sure students using CAD packages would welcome such a service.

Best wishes,

Geoff
