You may have already seen this, but Steve Draper at Glasgow University has collated some information and resources on PhDs by publication, together with some of his own thoughts, at http://www.psy.gla.ac.uk/~steve/resources/phd.html.

 

I completed mine this way, but through the ‘traditional’ portfolio route of a series of academic publications. A colleague here was also successful some years ago with a more diverse portfolio which included artistic outputs (in this case design work through embroidery) so there are examples of alternative approaches out there.

Dear SEDA List members,

 

The issue of doing a PhD by portfolio came up in some conversations with colleagues recently.  I was wondering if any of you knew of any good resources which discuss doing a PhD by this route, including discussions on the typical requirements and skills involved.  I would be particularly interested to hear about variants from the ‘traditional’ portfolio PhDs ( a series of academic journal articles) which might include portfolios containing elements of practice or non-academic media outputs.  Alternatively if any of you know of any recognised experts in this area who might be able to advise I would be really grateful.
