Abstract
Port drayage is an important component of the marine intermodal system and affects the efficiency of the intermodal supply chain. Sharing and utilizing drayage truck arrival information could improve both port drayage and port operational efficiency. I present the results from 2 years of research looking at this problem. We propose and evaluate several information sharing strategies, evaluate the impact of uncertainty and errors in this information, and assess the feasibility of truck arrival time predictions. To do so we use a variety of mathematical approaches, as well as a simulation program developed specifically for this problem. The research results demonstrate that information sharing can be highly beneficial, and implementation if feasible given current traffic conditions and data quality for the case study in the Los Angeles basin. We therefore recommend implementation of a proposed information sharing and container handling strategies to improve the efficiency of the drayage truck/container terminal interface.
About the Speaker
Anne Goodchild is the Alan and Inger Osberg Endowed Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Washington. Her research interests lie in logistics and freight transportation. Her work is motivated by the desire to reduce freight congestion, the impact of goods movement on the environment, and more effectively utilize the existing freight transportation infrastructure. She completed her PhD at the University of California at Berkeley in 2005, and is incoming chair of the Transportation Research Board’s Intermodal Freight Transportation Committee."
