GIS analyst(s) for sea floor habitat mapping project on a Greek island*

Archipelagos is an environmental NGO based on the beautiful Greek islands
of Ikaria and Samos and aims to further the protection of the rich yet
threatened marine and terrestrial environment of the Aegean Sea. Every
year, a number of young scientists from a range of scientific disciplines
are invited to join the activities of Archipelagos and gain work experience
the hands-on way.

Archipelagos has a number of research projects running that involve GIS
analysis and is currently seeking enthusiastic undergraduates and recent
graduates with a fair amount of GIS experience to provide cartographic
support to an exiting project Archipelagos is currently involved in
concerning the mapping of sea floor habitats. In the region where
Archipelagos is active, a large amount for invaluable sea floor habitats
can be found. Some of these habitats enjoy legal protection when mapped,
meaning certain harmful activities can no longer take place (trawling, … ).
A large effort is currently under way to collect the necessary data using
underwater cameras and side scanner technology.

Next to number of GIS assignments, volunteers are expected to assist in
other projects and may be asked to help out conducting fieldwork that is
organised during their placement with Archipelagos. Archipelagos is active
on a number of islands, including Samos, Ikaria, Fourni, Patmos, Arki and
Marathi and also has two sailing boats for marine research.

Starting the beginning of next year, Archipelagos is looking to take on 3-4
GIS analysts for a placement. The duration of the placement is at least 3
months, although longer placements are given priority. Placements starting
later in spring may be arranged as well. Placements usually start the first
weekend of the month but can be adapted to suit the schedules of both the
volunteers and the organisation. Depending on the duration of their stay,
volunteers can choose to spend one or more weeks travelling in and around
Greece to explore this stunning corner or the Mediterranean.

There is a participation fee of 650 euro/month, which covers all living
expenses. It includes lodging, food and use of the research facilities.
Funding should be available to students through international office of
their college or university and sometimes covers the travel costs and
travel insurance as well. Please inquire with the relevant authorities
regarding funding options before applying.

Interested? Please send your personal CV, an accompanying motivation letter
and two maps that are representative of your skills in computer cartography
or geoinformatics to [log in to unmask] . The deadline for
applications is 10 December 2013.
