JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral position in space physics at Ume=E5
University, Sweden

The postdoc project will focus on investigating energy and mass
transfer processes within the plasma sheet of the Earth's
magnetotail. It is well known that bursty bulk flows (BBFs) play an
important role in the magnetotail, but there are still large gaps in
the understanding of details important for the transfer processes, and
for the subsequent energy and mass transport within the coupled
magnetosphere-ionosphere system. Analysis of data is an essential part
of the work, and experience from combining advanced data analysis with
theoretical modeling is an advantage, as are strong computer
programming skills. The postdoc will analyze data from several
spacecraft missions, ground based observatories, and possibly also
laboratory plasma experiments. Concepts such as BBFs, dipolarization
fronts, energy conversion, reconnection, and magnetosphere-ionosphere
coupling are central for the postdoc project.

The project will be implemented in extensive collaboration within a
network of scientists from Ume=E5 University, from the Royal Institute
of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, and from the Swedish Institute of
Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna, as well as from other national and
international teams. Regular visits to KTH, IRF and other teams are
planned.

Time period: Full time (100%) during 2 years. Starting date upon
agreement.
