Aidan Moore serves on the board of the Portsmouth Youth Football Association but, like many men with school-age sons, is thinking more about baseball in these days leading into summer. . That's what he was doing last Saturday night, coaching in a Babe Ruth League game, when his third baseman leapt for a throw, landed hard on his head when a runner slid into him, and blacked out. . The immediate worry? A concussion. . "We were very fortunate the coach of the other team was a firefighter with EMT experience," said Moore. "(The player) wanted to get back into the game. But they made him go to the hospital and he had a CT scan, and it was determined he had one." . It's a scenario that worked out for the best, but whose alternatives have captured the imagination of youth coaches, volunteers and parents, many of whom watch their children playing sports without qualified medical personnel present. . On Tuesday, the PYFA and Access Sports Medicine will hold a Concussion Awareness and Prevention Workshop for Youth Sports at Portsmouth High School. The program, which is open to the public and free of charge, will outline ImPACT Baseline Testing, what to do if an athlete is suspected of suffering a concussion, and the protocols for returning to play. . Earlier this month, more than 2,000 NFL players sued the league, accusing the league of concealing information that linked football-related injuries to long-term brain damage. . Hockey stars like Sidney Crosby, Marc Savard and Nathan Horton have had their careers interrupted or ended by concussions. NHL tough guy Derek Boogaard died at the age of 28 last year after a drug and alcohol overdose while he was recovering from a concussion. . But this epidemic isn't just limited to the pros. . Earlier this week, the nation's largest youth football organization Pop Warner announced new rules limiting contact in practice sessions, including the elimination of full-speed, head-on blocking and tackling drills where players line up at least 3 yards apart. In a statement, the organization cited "efforts to provide the safest playing environment for our young athletes, and in light of developing concussion research" as a driving factor for the charges. . The National Federation of State High School Associations has estimated that more than 140,000 high school athletes suffer concussions each year. While the numbers may be highest in "collision" sports like football and hockey, other sports are at risk, and that includes youth sports, too. . "Cheerleading has a high concussion rate," said Cimon. "Soccer, because of the headers. Girls basketball. . . The complete article may be read at the URL above. . .
