Matt Sandusky appeared in the Centre County Courthouse ostensibly as a loyal if silent supporter of his adoptive father, Jerry Sandusky. . But after a week of tearful, gruesome accounts by eight men that they had been abused as boys by Jerry Sandusky, the former football assistant coach at Penn State, Matt Sandusky was ready to play a far different role in court. He offered to testify that he himself had been abused by his father, according to his lawyers, Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici. . The threat of that testimony, according to Jerry Sanduskys lawyers, led them to abandon plans to have their client take the stand, which could have paved the way to Matts being called as a rebuttal witness. . Jerry Sanduskys lead lawyer, Joseph Amendola, repeatedly said other victims were lying before and during the trial, which ended Friday with Sanduskys conviction of sexually assaulting 10 boys. After the verdict, Amendola said Sandusky had told him that he had never done anything inappropriate to Matt. . Nevertheless, Amendola said that Matts statement prevented him from putting on his best defense for Sandusky. . Our whole case was predicated on Jerry testifying, he said. If we called Jerry Sandusky as a witness, it would almost certainly have resulted in the commonwealth being permitted to call Matt Sandusky. . Jerry Sandusky still wanted to testify. He denied that he had ever had contact with his son, Matt. . Amendola said of the Sandusky family reaction to Matts statement, Well, of course, they were crushed by that. . It is unclear whether Matt Sandusky will ever tell his story publicly. . Court records and interviews suggest that his story is a complicated and painful one, with some nightmarish scenes from life with his adoptive father. His own broken marriage. A brush with the law.
