This looks like an interesting study, and one that could be extended to both genders.

There is an evident bias among television producers for young and beautiful presenters for science documentaries. Mostly but not exclusively female, and very often jobbing scientists with doctor titles flaunted at each and every opportunity. When it comes to age, there is a mix of demographic appeal ranging from adolescent to young adult (<40 years), which possibly mirrors that of TV programme makers as a group.

Science communicators of a critical if not downright sarcastic bent are wont to ridicule email appeals from TV researchers calling for “the next Brian Cox”, but this is a good business model for programme makers to follow. Their output may not inspire the young to pursue careers in science and engineering – the reasons why school students choose other paths are many and various – but a pleasing face and well-kept curves accentuated by skilled camera work certainly help to cheer us up.
