Dear Colleague,

I am contacting you in order to request some information that will assist with a global project that I am helping to develop. The Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) is developing a guideline about the management of critical laboratory results. This document will cover all aspects of critical result reporting, including definition, identification, communication and record keeping.

The information below is being sought to give a true international perspective to the final CLSI document. Up to now, we have obtained information from just a few European countries, Australia, New Zealand and USA. We do not wish to overlook information from other countries.

The specific information that I request from you is:

1.    Does your National Accreditation Body have any interpretations or additional accreditation criteria related to critical results as a mandatory requirement to fulfil the ISO 15189:2007 Standard?

2.    Has your scientific society or professional body issued any guideline or other relevant document that deals with critical laboratory results and their management?

3.    Is there any local or national survey data about the actual practice of reporting critical results in your country?

If you can help us with some of this information, please send me ([log in to unmask]) the information or the relevant documents by 15 July 2012.

You can send these in your local language. A translation into English would be helpful but is not essential. Any information you will send will be considered as confidential and will be used just for this specific CLSI project.

I greatly appreciate your kind collaboration. I hope the project will be completed quickly and serve as a useful guide to help us establish an international approach to the management of such an important issue in patient care.

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Prof. Andrea Rita Horvath, MD, PhD, EurClinChem, FRCPath, FRCPA
Past President of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine
